IPL Pigmentation Treatment

What is IPL Pigmentation Treatment

Restore a Brighter, More Even Complexion

Pigmentation concerns such as sun spots, age spots and areas of uneven skin tone can become more noticeable over time as a result of sun exposure, ageing and environmental factors. While these changes are common, they can affect confidence and leave the complexion looking dull or uneven.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Pigmentation Treatment is a non-invasive procedure designed to target excess melanin within the skin. Using carefully controlled pulses of light energy, IPL can help reduce the appearance of superficial pigmentation, restoring a clearer, more radiant and even-looking complexion with minimal downtime.

How Does IPL Pigmentation Treatment Work?

IPL uses broad-spectrum light energy that is selectively absorbed by the excess melanin within pigmented lesions. The light energy is converted into heat, causing the pigment to break down into smaller particles that are then naturally eliminated by the body over time.

Following treatment, pigmented areas often appear temporarily darker before gradually flaking away or fading, revealing a brighter and more even skin tone beneath.

In addition to targeting pigmentation, IPL may also stimulate collagen production, helping to improve overall skin quality and radiance.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

Your treatment journey begins with a comprehensive consultation and patch test to assess your skin concerns, determine suitability and develop a personalised treatment plan.

During treatment, the skin will be cleansed and a thin layer of cooling gel applied to the treatment area. Protective eyewear will be provided before the IPL handset is gently passed over the skin, delivering carefully controlled pulses of light energy.

Most clients describe the sensation as a mild warming feeling or the snapping sensation of an elastic band against the skin. Treatment is generally well tolerated, with sessions typically lasting 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

What Can IPL Pigmentation Treat?

IPL can be an effective treatment option for a range of superficial pigmentation concerns, including:

  • Sun spots (solar lentigines)

  • Age spots

  • Freckles

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Sun-damaged skin

  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation

Treatment is commonly performed on the face, neck, chest and hands – areas frequently exposed to the sun and often among the first to show visible signs of ageing.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required will depend on the type and extent of pigmentation being treated, as well as your individual skin response.

Many clients notice an improvement following their initial treatment; however, a course of 3–6 treatments, spaced approximately 3–4 weeks apart, is often recommended to achieve optimal results.

Your practitioner will discuss a bespoke treatment plan during your consultation.

Who Is Suitable for Treatment?

IPL Pigmentation Treatment is suitable for many individuals seeking to improve the appearance of superficial pigmentation and sun damage.

A consultation is essential to assess your skin type, medical history and treatment goals. Certain forms of pigmentation, such as melasma, may not be suitable for IPL treatment and alternative options may be recommended. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate treatment approach for your individual concerns.
